Joe Alwyn’s upcoming role in Hulu’s Conversations With Friends will see him portray an open relationship, so when asked if he and Taylor Swift had discussed relationship boundaries, he said no.
Joe Alwyn is set to star in the upcoming Hulu limited series Conversations With Friends, which is based on the same-named novel by Sally Rooney. Frances, a 21-year-old college student played by Alison Oliver, is “forced to confront her own weaknesses through a succession of relationships,” according to the show.
Joe will play Nick Conway, who has an open relationship throughout the series but don’t worry, Swifties, because his character’s dynamic is the polar opposite of his real-life affair with Taylor Swift.
Joe was eager to point out that his on-screen life is very different from his off-screen life, and he even shared his thoughts on open partnerships in general. During the show’s CTAM presentation on Tuesday, Joe was reportedly asked if he had ever discussed the topic with his high-profile partner, to which Joe reportedly said that when it comes to open relationships, “I think individuals can do what they want and make them happy.” I’m clearly content in a monogamous relationship,” she says, adding that open relationships “see tiresome.”
Joe went on to say that one of the most intriguing aspects of Sally’s writing is that she “explores happiness, love, desire, and intimacy outside of those constructs that we create for ourselves, whether that’s friendships, families, or relationships,” adding, “What she explores is happiness, love, desire, and intimacy outside of those constructs that we create for ourselves, whether that’s friendships, families, or relationships.” “I believe it’s endlessly intriguing as a discourse,” he said, “and one of the reasons why people love her books is our inability to—without giving anything away—tie things up in a tidy bow at the end of her stories.” It’s basically always making you think.”
Joe’s character is paired with both his wife Melissa, played by Jemima Kirk, and Frances in the trailer. Bobby Connolly, who has a connection with both Nick’s wife and Frances, is played by Sasha Lane. To put it another way, when watching the show, it’s best to go in with an open mind, which is something Jemima also emphasizes when it comes to open relationships.
“Because of the nature of an open relationship, there’s just a lot of talking,” she explained. You have to discuss with your spouse or anything on a weekly basis about what’s acceptable and unacceptable, then re-establish grey areas.” This is a brand-new and exciting part for Joe, and it’s set to premiere on Hulu in the spring of this year, but when it’s all said and done, Joe couldn’t be happier with his ONE true ‘Lover.’
