Charli D’Amelio took to social media recently to criticise TikTok for allegedly shadowbanning her account. You’d think the people behind TikTok would idolise Charli D’Amelio with over 135 million followers and over 10.5 billion total views on her videos.
Charlie and her sister, Dixie D’Amelio, have very much become some of TikTok’s most known content providers, with Charli being the most followed. After Charli recently blasted TikTok for supposedly “shadowbanning” her account, it appears that the app isn’t feeling the love.
If you’re unfamiliar with the term “shadowbanning,” it refers to the act of partially banning or blocking a user from a platform (in this case, TikTok) without the user being aware of it. This means that the user’s posts, likes, and comments are hidden from the online community and only visible on their own devices.
A content creator may face a ban if they violate the app’s terms and conditions, privacy rules, and other policies. So, what went wrong with Charli? Charli came to Twitter on Wednesday to share a screenshot of her TikTok account, and it appears that four videos have been published since February 8th, but have not been made public owing to the restriction.
“Why?” Charli wrote as a caption on the photo. “Is it true that I’m grounded?” However, she did not provide any explanation or reasons for why her shadowban occurred. Fans quickly expressed their displeasure, with one tweeting, “They truly temp banned their biggest creator.” “She’s grounded,” commented another person. Fortunately for Charli fans, it appears that her apparent shadow ban was only temporary, as she has since been permitted to upload videos to TikTok again. If TikTok decided to prohibit its most popular content creator, we’d be very baffled.
According to the comments on Charli’s tweet, her “shadow ban” may have been more of a warning than a ban. Around the same time as Charli’s tweet, it appears that many other TikTok users were having issues with the app when trying to upload videos. Although we’re curious to see if Charli will ever respond to her not-so-shadowban, it appears like TikTok and Charli are back to business as normal.
