An attorney for the Laundrie family has spoken out one month after Brian Laundrie’s remains were verified to have been discovered, ruling his official cause of death as a suicide.
Multiple search attempts were undertaken for months to uncover any evidence of Brian Laundrie when he returned to his home state of Florida in mid-September without fiance Gabby Petito following a cross-country road trip.
If you need a refresher, here’s a good place to start. Gabby’s parents reported her missing on September 11, and four days later, authorities called Brian a “person of interest,” but they were unable to locate him after checking his residence in North Port, Florida.
Gabby’s bones were discovered at a campground in the Bridger-Teton National Forest a week later and were eventually verified to be hers after the mode of death was deemed a murder. A team of detectives and even Dog the Bounty Hunter were involved in the hunt for Brian until his parents got involved and discovered fragmentary human remains on October 20th in a section of Carlton Reserve near the family’s house that had been underwater during earlier searches.
Brian’s family attorney, Steven Bertolino, claimed after the autopsy that “no manner or cause of death was found,” but that changed on Tuesday after he published a statement to CNN clarifying that “the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide.” Any queries, including how Brian got to obtain a gun in the first place, have been directed to authorities by CNN.
The Florida District Twelve Medical Examiner’s Office issued a news statement detailing how they arrived at such conclusions with the aid of a forensic anthropologist and a forensic odontologist who had been examining Brian’s bones. To authenticate his identity and cause of death, examiners employed dental comparison, bone reconstruction, and DNA analysis. During the hunt, Brian’s father discovered a notepad near where his bones were eventually located, which was damp owing to the marshy nature of the reserve and could’ve been a vital piece of evidence in offering answers concerning Gabby’s death.
The remainder of this case remains a mystery, thus officials haven’t confirmed whether they were able to obtain information from the notebook. “We are thankful that another step in finalising this case has been taken,” North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison said on Tuesday, adding, “While this entire situation evokes nothing but sadness, we’re hopeful that all of the work that went into the chaotic search for answers will help heal those impacted.”
While it may appear that the case is nearing a conclusion, there are still a slew of unsolved concerns surrounding both murders, with fans of the case believing that none of the evidence line up. Many people pointed out that no mention of a gun was made near Brian’s remains, and many are sceptical of the entire tale, especially because it came from his family’s attorney.
Not to mention the rest of his stuff, such as clothing and shoes, about which nothing was said. Although the conclusion of this case falls short of many people’s expectations in terms of ultimately bringing Gabby to justice, we can only hope that her family and loved ones will find peace during this difficult time.
