Cantwell’s film credits include special photographic effects for technical dialogue for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and computer graphics design consultant for WarGames (1983). Cantwell graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a degree in animation. In 1973, he was employed by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center to produce effects for and direct an early multimedia presentation titled Voyage to the Outer Planets. In 1984, Cantwell was nominated for Best Special Visual Effects for his work on WarGames at the 37th British Academy Film Awards.
